Kalvin Phillips has been cautioned by Rio Ferdinand not to join Manchester United this summer.

The England international's future is the subject of much discussion, and a move away from Ellan Road appears imminent, especially if Leeds get relegated, which appears to be the case.

United have been extensively connected with a move for the 26-year-old, with new boss Erik ten Hag anxious to bolster a midfield that is set to lose Paul Pogba's talents, as well as the likes of Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, and Jesse Lingard.

Only six players have ever gone from Leeds to United, including Ferdinand, and none since Alan Smith's controversial move in the summer of 2004 after the Yorkshire club had been relegated.

Ferdinand, on the other hand, believes Phillips' situation is vastly different from that in which he found himself in 2002, when he came to Old Trafford for a then-record £29 million fee.

'I don't think Kalvin Phillips is a name that should be associated with Manchester United,' he said on his Vibe with Five YouTube channel.

'I simply believe he is a Leeds lad.' The fan rivalry, as well as his family, are all present. It's not like when I left, when I had no relatives in Leeds but my cousin.

'They didn't seem to mind. It was a whole different experience. Kalvin Phillips is unlikely to join Manchester United. It will be the biggest surprise if he does.'
